This week we welcomed our own Bear Stephenson for a unique presentation! He educated us on the famous Rotarian and founder, Paul Harris. Paul had a very adventurous and unique life. He loved life and wanted to experience all he could. Even though he was born in Wisconsin in 1868 with five siblings, he grew up with his grandparents in Vermont. He was expelled from two different schools before later getting his PhD at Princeton and a law degree in Chicago. After graduating law school, he decided to take 5 years to move around and experience as many things as he could. He lived all around the world, doing many different jobs and meeting lots of new people. At the age of 28, he finally moved back to Chicago to build a life.
Paul decided to form a club of formal friendships to help each other in business. There were 5 original members and they rotated their meeting location back and forth between their businesses. Consequently, the Rotary Club was born in 1905. Originally, there was no fee to join, but it cost .50 per missed meeting, they met every two weeks except in June and July, and they voted on others joining but one ‘no’ vote from any member knocked someone out. The club was so successful that one year later they had 80 members! But what started as a reciprocal exchange of business, later adopted a community service focus of helping others. 3 years later, they expanded the Rotary Club concept to San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, and Los Angeles. And now, years later, there are 1.2 million Rotarians internationally across 33,000 clubs in 200 countries. These clubs have helped so many people over the years, all because Paul Harris believed he could make the world a better place!

AnnouncementsPlease pray for Kelly Johnson and her family. Her sweet mother, Marie Dean passed away, and only a few short months after losing her father. Sam and Marie were special people who left a lasting legacy in this community and on the hearts of people that knew them. Please continue to pray for comfort and peace for Kelly and her family. Tom is collecting our Rotarian magazines again for the Interact Club. Please kindly donate yours after you are finished with it since the Interact and Rotaract Clubs do not get them and may enjoy reading them. Statements have been sent out for Q3 Rotary Dues. If you did not receive this via email, please let Jerry or Michael know. There are still a few unpaid invoices. Please be sure that you have paid them or made arrangements with Michael. Our first Rotary Social Event of the year has been planned for Friday, September 6th at 6 pm. It will be held at the Eslinger house in Clinton. He has a pool and nice patio area to host a fall social! If you and/or your guest can make it, please give Bill a head count. They can always use more help on the social committee as well if you are interested in joining! Ron would like to begin something new this year to help us get to know each other better. He would like for everyone to give a one to two-minute speech about yourself (who you are, what business you’re with and what you do there). You can select your week and let Ron know which one you would like. |
