This week we welcomed Vivian Gwinn with Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee. She is the Community Engagement Director for all of the nine counties they serve across East Tennessee and Southern Virginia. Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee has been transforming the lives of children since 1970. It is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States, consisting of more than 350 agencies nationwide.
The organization matches children ages 6-18, in one to one mentoring relationships. Their vision is that all children achieve success in life. And since there is overwhelming evidence that supports the correlation of strong, healthy relationships to success, that is just how they achieve their vision. Their mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Mentoring works and the statistics back it up. The latest data shows that littles involved in their program are more likely to achieve the avoidance of risky behavior by 97%, achieve socio-emotional competencies and improve relationships with others by 94%, and maintain or improve educational success by 88%.
Currently, they have 650 matches, but they still have 98 more kids waiting for a big sister or brother. If you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring the organization, you can find more information at http://www.tennesseebig.org.
