Recap

This week our Rotary Club welcomed representatives from the Atomic City Sportsman Club. Vice President Stephen Barnes and Secretary Al Guidry visited us to talk about the club and what they do. The Sportsman Club was founded in 1969 in Oak Ridge and despite what you may think, it has nothing to do with sports. The main goal of the club is to help underprivileged youth in the community by providing assistance, scholarships and resources that they wouldn’t ordinarily have access to. They accomplish this through various annual fundraisers to raise money for these children. Their largest fundraiser is their Youth and Scholarship Impact Charity Golf Tournament, whereby 100% of the proceeds go directly to children in need. The golf tournament coincides with the Secret City Festival each year, which has helped it grow in popularity and size. Although the club used to have 30 members, they are now down to eight. However, among eight members, they raise close to $100,000 per year to fund their outreach programs!

The Sportsman Club does many other outreach programs in the community as well. They host an annual Christmas party each year, for which they buy Christmas gifts for over 100 underprivileged children. They also offer a Sickle Cell Testing Program, host an annual Valentine’s Day Dance, voter registration drives, trips to Washington D.C. for kids in the community, as well as a scholarship program. In addition, they also sponsor a senior citizen program as well to assist homebound seniors.

Membership

Visitors this week included:

  • Pastor Scott Wilks – First United Methodist Church
  • Keith Pierce – Director of Missions for the Anderson County Baptist Association

Bill needs a head count for the Social ASAP! Please see the attached sign-up sheet, fill it out and turn it in to him or George. This will be our first Rotary Social Event of the year and is on Friday, September 6th at 6 pm. It will be held at the Eslinger house in Clinton. John Thompson called Ron this week and unfortunately shared that his Parkinson's Disease makes it very difficult for him to get to Rotary Meetings anymore. He has asked that we call to talk and come by to see him if possible. His home phone number is (865) 463-8956 and cell is (865) 292-3021. His address 736 Blockhouse Valley Rd., Clinton, TN 37716. This is in South Clinton. Please give him a call when you get the chance.

Bill and George are still asking for help on the social committee. If you would be interested in joining it and helping plan our club socials and events, please let them know.

Statements have been sent out for Q3 Rotary Dues. If you did not receive this via email, please let Jerry or Michael know. There are still a few unpaid invoices. Please be sure that you have paid them or made arrangements with Michael.

Interact and Rotaract News

On Saturday August 24, twenty Interactors from Anderson County High School picked 406 pounds of heirloom apples from the beautiful orchard of the Alex Haley farm in Clinton. Rotarians Tom Connolly and Jay Birkbeck (and family) were there to help as well. After a morning of straining to reach the best apples at the top of the trees, our Interactors enjoyed a quiet lunch in the serene surroundings of the Children's Defense Fund Alex Haley Farm.

The 2019 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) has been set for Saturday, September 21, at Camp Nakanawa in Crossville. Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30 AM Central time, and the seminar begins promptly at 8:15 AM. Be looking for information on how you can help or see Tom if you are interested!

Rotaract held their back-to-school Recruiting Day this week at Roane State Community College. They had a great response and continue to see more members join that were previously involved with Interact in high school!
