Recap

This week we welcomed speaker Sam Venable. Sam reveled that he is currently working on a joke book, so we had the pleasure of being his test audience! His new joke book is comprised of jokes that people would send him over the years that he eventually began keeping. So fittingly, his book is titled ‘The Joke’s on You! All I did was Empty out my Filing Cabinets’. He hopes to release it in the coming months. Be sure to look for it soon to read some very familiar jokes for those of us who shared laughs at them this week!

Some background on Sam and his professional accomplishments is best described in Ron’s bio this week. Sam Venable, b. 1947, is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a B.S. degree in journalism and minor in forestry and wildlife management. He has enjoyed a long career with daily newspapers in Tennessee. Since 1970, he has been with the Knoxville News Sentinel, first as outdoors editor, later (1985) changing to general interest-humor columnist. The author of eleven books, he is the winner of more than three dozen local, state and national writing awards.

Venable is widely known throughout Southern Appalachia as a standup comedian, often appearing in the "Talk Is Cheap" comedy tour with fellow entertainers Bill Landry, Jim Claborn and Elizabeth Rose. He and his wife Mary Ann, a UT graduate now retired from many years in software instruction, live in a log house on the outskirts of Knoxville. They are parents of two adult children and two grandchildren.

Announcements

Tom is collecting our Rotarian magazines again for the Interact Club. Please kindly donate yours after you are finished with it since the Interact and Rotaract Clubs do not get them and may enjoy reading them.

If you did not get a Rotary mug on Ron’s first day as Club President, please let him know and he will get you one.

Our first Rotary Social Event of the year has been tentatively planned for Friday, September 6th at 6 pm. It will be held at the Eslinger house in Clinton. He has a pool and nice patio area to host a fall social! If you and/or your guest can make it, please give Bill a head count. They can always use more help on the social committee as well if you are interested in joining!

Statements have been sent out for Q3 Rotary Dues. If you did not receive this via email, please let Jerry or Michael know.

Did everyone get an email from Ron last week? If not, please let him know so that he can add you to his list.

Ron would like to begin something new this year to help us get to know each other better. He would like for everyone to give a one to two minute speech about yourself (who you are, what business you’re with and what you do there). You can select your week and let Ron know which one you would like.

Club Business

Ron mentioned a few areas that we need everyone’s help with this year.

  • Membership AND RETENTION – Instead of only focusing on adding new members, he would like to also focus on retaining the ones we have now. However, that being said, the goal is still to add 3 new members for the year.
  • Speaker Committee – Ronnie needs assistance recruiting speakers. If you know of someone that would like to speak or may be of interest, please let him know.
  • Public Relations Committee – We need help with social media! If one or two people in the club would be interested in helping with this, especially our Facebook page posting, please let Ron or Leighann know. Also, please make sure you ‘like’ our FB page too! You will find the button at the top of this newsletter every week that takes you right to it.
  • Treasury - It would greatly help Michael and Jerry if everyone would kindly pay their dues on time so they don’t have to keep asking. The quarterly dues statement went out this week from Jerry, so please look for that and pay it in a timely manner.
  • Social Committee – We are looking for a few people to help Bill on this committee. We would like to host a Fall Fling and Spring Fling where we do something fun together outside of regular meetings. If you would be interested in helping, please see Bill or Ron.

A sign-up sheet is attached to this newsletter. If you would be interested in helping on one of these committees, it would be greatly appreciated!

Member & Community News

Please pray for Kelly Johnson and her family. Her sweet mother, Marie, had a bad fall this week. Kelly explained the situation in her Facebook post on Tuesday. We thought it would be best to share it in her words.
‘It is with the heaviest heart that I share this news with our family and friends. Mom fell today and has suffered a spinal C2 subluxation (dislocation), leaving her paralyzed from the shoulders down. The neurosurgeon shared with us that the movement in the vertebrae has left the spinal chord severely damaged with no solution. This part of the spine also assists with breathing, which makes this a terrible place for an injury. She has moved into palliative care where they say her breathing will slow until she runs to meet my Daddy in heaven. Words cannot describe the shock, sadness, fear, and deep hurt that Chris and I feel. There are no words. She told me before they transported her to UT Trauma that she was ready to be with Dad. In the near future, she will get her wish. Meanwhile, the emptiness in our hearts over losing Dad just got significantly bigger- which I honestly never thought was possible. Please say a prayer for my Mom that she does not suffer long and she keeps her eyes set on the 2 greatest men- Jesus and Samuel Dale Dean.’

Please also pray for Ron’s family. Many of you may have heard about the tragic accident in Guatemala involving two teenage children while their family was traveling on a mission trip. They are close relatives of Ron Eslinger and he asked for prayers for them. Please continue to lift the family up in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this unimaginable tragedy.

District News

Our new District Governor, Greg Maciolek, has sent out a video newsletter introducing himself and outlining goals for the upcoming year. Please take 12 minutes of your time to watch it. It gives good insight on how Rotary dues are used and how individual clubs benefit from them. You can find it at rotarydistrict6780.com.
