This week we welcomed speaker Sam Venable. Sam reveled that he is currently working on a joke book, so we had the pleasure of being his test audience! His new joke book is comprised of jokes that people would send him over the years that he eventually began keeping. So fittingly, his book is titled ‘The Joke’s on You! All I did was Empty out my Filing Cabinets’. He hopes to release it in the coming months. Be sure to look for it soon to read some very familiar jokes for those of us who shared laughs at them this week!
Some background on Sam and his professional accomplishments is best described in Ron’s bio this week. Sam Venable, b. 1947, is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a B.S. degree in journalism and minor in forestry and wildlife management. He has enjoyed a long career with daily newspapers in Tennessee. Since 1970, he has been with the Knoxville News Sentinel, first as outdoors editor, later (1985) changing to general interest-humor columnist. The author of eleven books, he is the winner of more than three dozen local, state and national writing awards.
Venable is widely known throughout Southern Appalachia as a standup comedian, often appearing in the "Talk Is Cheap" comedy tour with fellow entertainers Bill Landry, Jim Claborn and Elizabeth Rose. He and his wife Mary Ann, a UT graduate now retired from many years in software instruction, live in a log house on the outskirts of Knoxville. They are parents of two adult children and two grandchildren.

AnnouncementsTom is collecting our Rotarian magazines again for the Interact Club. Please kindly donate yours after you are finished with it since the Interact and Rotaract Clubs do not get them and may enjoy reading them. If you did not get a Rotary mug on Ron’s first day as Club President, please let him know and he will get you one. Our first Rotary Social Event of the year has been tentatively planned for Friday, September 6th at 6 pm. It will be held at the Eslinger house in Clinton. He has a pool and nice patio area to host a fall social! If you and/or your guest can make it, please give Bill a head count. They can always use more help on the social committee as well if you are interested in joining! Statements have been sent out for Q3 Rotary Dues. If you did not receive this via email, please let Jerry or Michael know. Did everyone get an email from Ron last week? If not, please let him know so that he can add you to his list. Ron would like to begin something new this year to help us get to know each other better. He would like for everyone to give a one to two minute speech about yourself (who you are, what business you’re with and what you do there). You can select your week and let Ron know which one you would like. |
Club BusinessRon mentioned a few areas that we need everyone’s help with this year.
A sign-up sheet is attached to this newsletter. If you would be interested in helping on one of these committees, it would be greatly appreciated! |

Member & Community NewsPlease pray for Kelly Johnson and her family. Her sweet mother, Marie, had a bad fall this week. Kelly explained the situation in her Facebook post on Tuesday. We thought it would be best to share it in her words. Please also pray for Ron’s family. Many of you may have heard about the tragic accident in Guatemala involving two teenage children while their family was traveling on a mission trip. They are close relatives of Ron Eslinger and he asked for prayers for them. Please continue to lift the family up in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this unimaginable tragedy. |
District NewsOur new District Governor, Greg Maciolek, has sent out a video newsletter introducing himself and outlining goals for the upcoming year. Please take 12 minutes of your time to watch it. It gives good insight on how Rotary dues are used and how individual clubs benefit from them. You can find it at rotarydistrict6780.com. Are you interested in knowing more about Rotary at the district and international level? If so, plan to attend the Rotary Leadership Institute on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the Roane State Crossville Campus!
