This week, we welcomed the Tennessee Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution. Coming to speak and represent the organization were Gary Love, Jerry Mustin and Steve Portwood. Their group meets at the David Hall Cabin in Claxton, but is only one small chapter of a much larger organization throughout the United States. The Sons of the Revolution is a hereditary patriotic society instituted to perpetuate the memory of the men who, in the military, naval and civil service of the colonies and the Continental Congress, by their acts or counsel, achieved the independence of the country. They seek to promote the proper celebration of the anniversaries of the birthday of George Washington, and of prominent events connected with the War of the Revolution; to collect and secure for preservation the rolls, records, and other documents relating to that period; to inspire the members of the Society with the patriotic spirit of their forefathers; and promote the feeling of friendship among them.
During their visit with us, they detailed the story of the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780 in particular. The battle was against the British Commander, Patrick Ferguson, who controlled the left flank of General Cornwallis’ British Army. The British Army’s loss at the Battle of Kings Mountain is considered the turning point of the Revolutionary War. The loss forced General Cornwallis to eventually retreat to Yorktown, Virginia, where he surrendered to General Washington. More information can be found online about their organization at tnsor.org.
