Recap

This week, we welcomed Natalie Ivey from the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking (CCAHT). After graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Law, Natalie began her career as an Assistant District Attorney in the 13th Judicial District prosecuting crimes of domestic and sexual violence. She then served as the Executive Director of a victim service agency before relocating with her family to Knoxville. After working as an attorney in the private sector for the last several years, Natalie is excited to be back in the world of advocacy and outreach. Through her role with CCAHT, Natalie oversees all training and educational initiatives; coordinates FREE Knox and FREE Knox Kids, CCAHT's anti-trafficking multi-disciplinary teams; and helps advocate for systemic change across East Tennessee.

Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking is a non-profit organization that services 33 counties across Tennessee. They provide free training and resources on many different levels ranging from general public training to human trafficking survivors. Natalie said that the sex trafficking they see is very rarely a stranger-danger type of crime and abduction. The most common type they experience is familial or multi-generational trafficking, and surprisingly, the most common culprit is the mother. Rural areas have a high potential for this particular type of trafficking due to specific contributing characteristics, including more isolated geographic locations.

In 2008, the Coalition trained 2,600 people and service referrals increased by 80% because of raised awareness. So far in 2019, they have already trained over 5,000 people as well! As a community, the most helpful thing that we can do is to accept that it’s happening here and pay attention to what is going on around you. They have a human trafficking hotline and ask everyone to please call and report anything that looks unusual. More information can be found online at https://growfreetn.org.

Ron Meredith invited everyone to join 96.7 Merle FM at Harrison’s Grill and Bar this coming Monday, November 4th from 4-6 pm. Come for drinks, hors d’oeuvres and meet and hear NASCAR Hall of Fame member, Rusty Wallace. Merle is Knoxville’s exclusive radio voice for NASCAR. Rusty will speak beginning at 5:15 and at 6pm, they will draw one name from those present to receive a NASCAR race broadcast advertising package for the 2020 season, valued at $9,400! They hope to see you there!

District News

The Purple Pinkie Project this year was a huge success! Final numbers have not been released yet, but preliminary findings indicate that over $500,000 was raised! Furthermore, our District was responsible for two-thirds of the money that came in! That is an overwhelming success and our club should be very proud to have been a part of it!

The Literacy Committee of the Knoxville Club will conduct a book drive throughout the month of October. The collected books will support a literacy project in low income neighborhoods where people will be allowed to select and keep books that they could not otherwise afford. This is an ongoing project, so they need lots of books!

Clean out your bookshelves and ask friends and neighbors to join you in contributing books. Any kind of book except textbooks is useful in this project. The club can also take unused McKay's credit slips if you have any around.

The club will collect books at its regular meetings, or you may drop them off with the valet at the front door of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Knoxville. You don't even have to park!

This project is meant to address the lack of books in the homes of children and adults who live in poverty. You can help make that happen.

Once again, the Rotary Regional Golf Classic tournament will be held in the Spring. We will need four players again to represent our club. Be looking for more information on this coming soon. If you are interested in playing, please see Ron.
