November Newsletter - Week 4

This week was a little different. We had Jerry talk to us about the upcoming Daddy Daughter Dance. The date has been scheduled for February 10, 2018. Last year we sold 759 tickets. As the event gets bigger each year, new concerns arise such as capacity issues and security. For now, we are planning to continue the dance this year again at Clinton Middle School. We also hope to get security added as well this year and Jerry is currently looking into our options. Another issue is the balloon drop. Therefore, the balloon drop will have it's own separate committee this year. This has to work this year! If you are up for this committee, please research balloon drop methods on YouTube and send yourself to balloon school...cause this is serious folks!

PLEASE sign up for a committee next week since we will not have a chance to discuss this again until after Christmas. Committees will include decorating, balloon drop, refreshments, PR and advertising, front desk/welcome, and clean-up. We will pass around a sign up sheet next week. Please commit yourself to one or you will be appointed to one.

Tickets will also be sold online at Eventbright this year as well. Jerry is setting this up and it will go live when we get tickets. Tickets should be available to purchase on December 15th. We will promote the event heavily on social media when they go on sale.

Apple Blossom Cafe is also serving a special menu for the event and would like to be involved. We are looking for ways to promote that as well and will give you more information as it becomes available.

On a final note, please let George know if your business would like to be a sponsor again this year. We hope you are getting excited about the event! It continues to grow every year, which requires more help. So we will need all hands on deck for this one again!

Membership

We were glad to have the following guests with us this week:
  • Lydia Birk - visiting from another club
  • Jerry Griffey - our special honorary member
  • Tabitha Massengille with Food City (for John Jordan)
  • Scott Burton - Clinton City Mayor

Other Items to Note

Jerry Griffey donated $100 and wrote a letter of appreciation to the club for the outstanding work we do with the youth in our area. He has asked Tom to speak to his Knoxville Club and assist them in putting together a youth program there as well. We are very thankful for Jerry and his friendship. We appreciate Tom and the dedication and hard work he puts into the club's youth programs! Without Tom, it wouldn't be possible to accomplish what all our club does throughout the county.
Timely Topics is having an Auction on February 27, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Center. They have asked for help in donating items. Proceeds go to fund scholarships for high school seniors and service projects. They are looking for donations including antique quilts, silver service items, jewelry, art work, glass, and gently used furniture. Please have donations turned in before February 1, 2018.

Looking Ahead

The Children's Christmas party will be on Tuesday, December 12th during our normal meeting time, but in the big room this year. PLEASE make sure that if you are buying for a child, that you turn your gifts in to Jerry's office by Friday, December 8th in a black trash bag with your child's list inside and their name on the outside. Please do not wrap the gifts inside either. Keep in mind that the amount to spend this year is $175, which is more than it has been in year's past. Save your receipts and give them to Michael for reimbursement up to $175 per child. This is always an enjoyable and heartwarming experience. If you haven't gotten to experience this before, you are in for a treat!
We still need two people to fill slots for Salvation Army Bell Ringing next Tuesday due to a change in the schedule. If you are available to ring bells on Tuesday, December 5th at Food City from 10 a.m. to noon or from 6:00-7:00 p.m., please let John Jordan know.

Project Information

The Community Action Coat Drive is going on now! We are accepting new and gently used coat donations in all sizes to help furnish coats for those that don’t have the money to buy one otherwise. You may either drop your donations off at Fox Toyota, MIG or bring them to Rotary with you on Tuesdays. We have collected 85 coats, however, there is still a need for 1,500 more. In the past, our club has collected about 5,000 coats each year for this. We hope this year will be no different! Please see ET with any questions.
On Saturday, December 16th, Tom is taking youth groups to Gatlinburg again to help with wildfire recovery. They plan to help clean up home sites that are still burned from wildfires. They are expecting to have students involved across all area local high schools but still need more adults to. It would be extrememly helpful as well if you have experience using a chainsaw or are good with a broom. The bus will be leaving from RSCC Oak Ridge and then stop by the Community Center to pickup if you need transportation. Please let Tom know if you are interested and able.to go.
