RecapIt was good to be back in Rotary this week! We kicked off a new year with speakers Burt Rosen and Mark Roberts with Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM). Burt told his personal testimony and journey of how he came to work for KARM. No doubt he’s had a very arduous and painful journey growing up a little boy from a broken home in Miami to years later, helping broken people in the streets of Knoxville. He talked about several struggles that God brought them through, but there was one in particular that led him to KARM. Matthew, the oldest of his four children, was a great kid that was preparing to play football for the Miami Hurricanes. But plans changed after Hurricane Andrew hit and he returned home and dropped out of college. One thing led to another and he ended up living on the streets of New York City. Burt and his wife Carolyn went to find him and beg him to come home, but he didn’t want to. Little did they know, that would be the last time they would ever see Matthew. After that, he was never seen again and has been missing for 14 years now.A year into Matthew’s disappearance, someone called him about the position at KARM in Knoxville, Tennessee. Although he was reluctant about it, after much prayer he was convinced that’s where he needed to be. So, they took a leap of faith and have been helping lost and hurting people in East Tennessee ever since. Burt quickly learned that you cannot do this job unless your heart is broken for these people. Knox Area Rescue Ministries helps 400-500 men, women and children every day. In addition, they serve between 750-1000 meals every day. They have emergency and residential overnight shelters where they provide basic needs to those who need it, as well as offer love, encouragement and the message of Christ. They practice the Berea model of restoring lives. It teaches the homeless to give back to others and to work for what they get in order to break the mindset of receiving hand-outs. It teaches them basic, practical life skills to help them be able to work their way out of poverty and break the cycle.
