RecapThis week we had a crowd! It was great to see everyone back again after our snow break last week! We had so many people attend this week that we had to pull up an extra table to accommodate everyone! Our speaker was Jim Holland with Avison Young. Although he may work in Commercial Real Estate, that is not at all what he came to talk to us about! He was full of adventures and stories to share! He told a story about his friend Ed. Ed asked him one day how many days he had left. Of course, Jim thought that was an odd question to ask. Ed said that he had figured up how many quality days he thought he might have left in his life. He went on to ask Jim what he was going to do with his ‘last days’ and how he could make the most of them. Jim said his best guess was that he probably about 8,000 more days of quality life based on his age. So, he and Ed made a plan to really make each day count! And boy did they! They formed a bucket list of sorts and since then have already accomplished a lifetime worth of adventures! Ed has hiked the Appalachian Trail and Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. He has also flown into Katmandu, Nepal for a 3-week journey with his son. They climbed to an Everest base camp to stay. From there they hiked the Lobuche Peak but Jim was unable to summit due to the depth of the snow. His son, however, did reach the top. He has also climbed Aconcagua in Argentina and stayed at a mule camp while there. He has spent 17 days hiking the Grand Canyon and traveling by water on the Colorado River in the middle of January. He is now currently working to finish a single pursuit of his to ride across the country to the Artic Circle by motorcycle. Because he does not have that much consecutive time off to complete this task, he is having to break it up into smaller portions where he temporarily puts his bike into a storage unit until he comes back for the next stint. However, because of a motorcycle wreck that separated his shoulder, in which he had to drive 85 miles injured to a hospital, he is temporarily out of commission while his bike is being repaired. He is always looking for his next big adventure and thinks he would like to try climbing Mount Elbrus in Russia next! I guess you could say he is certainly making his ‘last days’ count! |
